Charles Kline Landis, the developer who founded Vineland and later Sea Isle City, was born in Philadelphia. He bought Ludlam's Island around 1880 and planned a seaside resort on it with Venice-style canals. Sea Isle's main street, Landis Avenue, is named for him.
