December 4, 1911 · Strathmere
On December 4, 1911, the coal barge Maryland went down in a storm near Ludlam Beach, close to Strathmere and Sea Isle City. All four people on board got out alive. The vessel had been rebuilt from the hull of the well-known excursion steamer General Slocum.
